SOCC

This is where I had my meetings yesterday and today--the NOAA building in Suitland. I find the building itself to be both awesome and silly. The excessive number of satellite dishes bolted onto it are somewhat humerous while being also awesome. I am unsure as to why it has NOAA written in huge letters on the side. Maybe someone was worried that they'd forget whose building it was...

The Other Coast
So, I'm currently in Suitland, MD for the week. Suitland outside of Washington, D.C. and is home to the Suitland Federal Center which is where I will be spending most of the week sitting through NOAA meetings related to my current JPL assignments. I flew out this morning, have 3 solid days of meetings, then fly back on Friday.

Why is X using 1.8 gigabytes of swap? Who approved that? I certainly didn't get any such memo.

The Corrent Party Submission Position Decision
So, I mentioned a few days ago that I was unsure as to the value that existed within The Orange Box. I would say that my opinion has been firmly entrenched into the good value camp. I say this because Portal is an absolutely amazing game. Although it can be played through in maybe 4.5 hours on the first time through, the writing and acting is simply superb. My opinion of the game is so high that I actually played through it a second time in order to listen to the developer commentary (which is actually rather interesting). Also, the game is worth the price of admission if only for the closing song. It is spoiler-rific, so I won't talk more about it, but it is definitely amazing.

On a completely unrelated note, "Fun Sized" microwave popcorn should not be stocked on the same shelves as normal sized popcorn. I propose that we outlaw this barbaric practice or require stringent labeling guidelines similar to what are used on explicit CDs--only instead of warning of explicit content, they warn of inappropriately sized portions.

HL2:E2
So, I just played all the way through Half-Life 2: Episode Two in one sitting. It was a very decent game, my only complaint is that I could play it in one sitting. It took about 5 or so hours to beat and I wasn't in any particular hurry. I felt similarly irritated when I played through HL2: Episode One and it simply stopped. At least this time it feels like progress was made.

I'm not sure that the $45 that the Orange Box cost will have been worth it to me since I already had Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One. I'll have to play Portal to see if that helps compensate. Unfortunately, I cannot count Team Fortress 2 as part of the value when doing a cost analysis for the Orange Box. Since TFC was free and because Team Fortress is multiplayer-only, it has no inherent value in my estimation. Yes, it is a fun game and I'd say that it is worth installing if you get it free, but it doesn't feel as though it is worth the other $15 of my $45 ($15 for HL2:E2, $15 for Portal, $15 for TFC). I think the Orange Box bundling was a great idea for Value to make buckets of money, but I would have rather saved a few bucks and not gotten "gift" copies of Half-Life 2 and HL2:E1.

Maybe tomorrow I'll beat Metroid Prime 3. I have 97/100 pickups; the end of the game must be near.

M'''
So, in Metroid Prime 3, there are four collectables that you get for doing various things. They are called 'credits' and there are four main types Red (for scanning creatures), Blue (for scanning Lore), Gold (for beating bosses), and Green. Green is where the real trick lies. Green credits are called "Friend Credits". It is impossible to actually earn Friend Credits in the game, instead you earn "Friend Vouchers". Friend Vouchers are sent to other Wiis and produce "Friend Credits" on their Metroid Prime 3 game. It seems as though it requires approximately 15 Friend Credits to unlock everything. Luckily, I have exactly 15 Friend Vouchers. If anyone is interested in setting up some kind of trade, let me know.

Also, apparently I am coming down with a cold. I slept 10 hours yesterday (4 immediately after work). I dislike being sick. This is especially true when being sick causes me to feel like my ear needs to be popped constantly.

Renting
Last night, I heard an advertisement on the radio for a place that did rent-to-own for rims. I consider this one of the signs of how far America has fallen. This is, of course, secondary to the Loonie reaching value parity with the US dollar.

CAS
Last night, I went to the Caltech Anime Society meeting. It is striking how much different CAS is from RHAS. The club consists primarily of former students (I'd guess there were maybe 2 people who were current caltech people there), and is run from a room not entirely dissimilar to a lounge using a television rather than a projector. They were showing Hare+Guu which was pretty funny, and a few other things. I'll probablly stick with this for a while, until I get bored of it.

Oaks
So, today I was running a few errands and I found something that I'd been looking for since I arrived in Pasadena. You see, I'd say that maybe one third of streets around here have the word "Oak" in their name. There's Fair Oaks, Oak Grove, Oakland, Grand Oaks, etc. Today I finally found Oak Avenue. It was about as exciting as I'd expected it to be, which is to say not very.

I've also found that there is not a single grocery store that can satisfy my shopping lists. One of them has a bakery and a butcher; the other carries IBC and pretzels. Unfortunately, together this means that I cannot simply go to one and get supplies. I find this irritating. What is more irritating is that the closest grocery with Jiffypop is nearly an hour away (two if traffic is bad, according to google).

Homecoming
This weekend was homecoming back at Rose. I had decided sometime in August that I was going to come back for it and in fact did. I had a ton of fun and got to see most of the people that make up my memories of Rose. Almost all of my time was spent at Theta Xi. It was a very different experience not having to be responsible for getting things done, but it was a lot of fun as I got to see all of my pledge brothers and most of the brothers with whom I spent the most time. It was also good to get the 004 show back together. We were missing a couple of people (Andrew, Nate), but we had the rest of the cast from all 3 years that we did the show. I'll try to get a recording of it up in a reasonable time frame but no promises.

Now, I am back in Altadena. Tomorrow I go back to work. Fun fun.
